The year is 1981 and you're in America. The cold war rages, Reagan is newly in the White House, and disco is thankfully beginning to fade away. You are still grieving over the loss of your dream ride from the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! which was never recovered. Thankfully though, your dentist gave you a hot stock tip on some new fruit company called Apple which just had their IPO. Now you need a new ride, and get to pick one new car from that model year. Unfortunately, this car is stolen in 10 years and you have no insurance, so you can't profit from reselling. This car is purely to be used and enjoyed. What do you choose?

1981 is in the middle of the automotive malaise period, and there is pretty much nothing good on the market. Emissions and safety regulations have choked performance and technology has not yet caught up to provide a solution. The Mustang V8 produced a whopping 120HP. The 81 Corvette 5.7 liter V8 produced 190HP. This is no-mans land for auto enthusiasts. For that reason, I'd choose a truck. I'd buy a new 1981 Chevy Suburban 4x4 with the optional 454 cubic inch V8. Screw the oil crisis, I want to be prepared to carry all my friends and all their stuff, or maybe smuggle some items across the southern border. What would you choose?

Would have to grow a mustache, buy a lot of Hawaiian shirts, and start carrying a 1911.

Pretty simple...I'd go to sleep 'till '87, and then...

I don't care what anybody says, I'll take an '81 Corvette. Don't care if it has 190 HP, its still badass. I'll take mine exactly like the one below.
Going to miss my '70 T/A though :,(

I also would be interested in a good cab over:

928 is a good choice, maybe the only performance option out there. But it still sucked bad in 81.
![]() 09/26/2014 at 12:56 |

What power did that make, 150HP?
![]() 09/26/2014 at 12:57 |

lol, I'm sure you know what I posted, it will CHANGE YOU
![]() 09/26/2014 at 12:57 |

This is true! Buy that and make your own performance.

Now that is the right choice...

OK I recall my choice and now go with this. Even if performance sucks, this is just cool.

Don't forget to buy the extended warranty! These things had a pretty short fuse!
Related-ish: I had a Garrett TBO-305 turbo for one of these (unused) in my possession for years. I eventually traded it to a buddy for beer and he installed it on a VW 1.8T Jetta as the big turbo on a compound set-up. Just to be different. It wasn't real fast, but it sure was cool!

Testarossa wasn't available in 81. 512 BB was though!

DeLorean.. the obvious choice in the Time Machine scenario...
![]() 09/26/2014 at 14:15 |

I actually think the late C3s are some of the best looking Corvettes, 81 included.

So many good choices in what is thought to be an awful automotive year! M1 is a great choice.

They look awesome, in my opinion. Imagine how awesome a resto-modded one would be.
